An Inside Look – Malene Grotrian, Fashion Designer

~Written by Guest Writer Jenna Fortin~

Recently Malene Grotrian Design has collaborated with Sara Lynn for  her upcoming Music Video Release. What a fun project to be a part of!   Sara and her team were great to work with. The theme of the video and  music style fit perfectly with the Malene Grotrian label.

Since opening the doors to her own atelier in December of 2008, Malene  Grotrian has been dressing some of Vancouver’s most notable talent.   Inspired by timeless, unique, European style, all designs are  sophisticated and created with femininity and elegance in mind. The  collections offer a variety of evening wear, professional wear and  custom designs.  All pieces are designed with unexpected details to  create a nouveau classic expression and are made locally in Vancouver  BC, Canada.

Born and raised in Denmark, Malene Grotrian graduated in 2004 from the  Danish design school, Teko Center Denmark.   After furthering her  design and fine art studies in Italy, Malene re-located to Canada.   For over four years, Malene worked with leading Canadian designers  honing in on her skills and love for detailed tailored designs and  couture fashion. It was during this time that she discovered her true  passion for women’s evening wear and her signature bustier, these  experiences inspired the inception of the Malene Grotrian label.

Malene Grotrian has earned the attention of the fashion elite and a  personal invitation within her first year of business to show at  exclusive New York Fashion Week where she unveiled her 2010 Spring/ Summer Collection.

In her soon to be released music video, The Shape I’m In, Sara Lynn is featured in pieces from Malene’s Fall Winter 2010 Collection.   The Fall/Holiday 2010 Collection is inspired by the structured  tailoring of 1940′s fashion. This collection is a modern contrast  between the tailored suit look with the glamour of an elegant hourglass silhouette in silk charmeuse fabrics.  The earth elements of  Ice and Water were inspiration for the light and shiny appearance and  texture of the fabrics. The pieces in this collection focus on  drawing attention to the waist and creating the silhouette of a  feminine hourglass shape. The designs incorporate fitted waistbands  with detailing of belt buckles, rouching and pleating to draw the eyes  to the waist.

In contrast to the glamorous evening look, the collection features a softer day look with dropped waistlines in tops and shirts that falls at the hips. The colour palette for Fall Holiday 2010 features dark shades of earthy browns, steel greys and blacks with accents of royal blue, fuchsia and silver mint to illustrate the element of ice and water. The fabrics used are a blend of lightweight silk charmeuse, light wool suiting, luxurious Italian silk jacquards,  raw silks, textured knits and a heavy weight virgin wool.

  1. I’d love to use the photo you took of me in a new bog post on the FMA Event – just a thumbnail size. Would that be okay if I include credit to you? Let me know. Thanks.
